Wiess Cabinet

The governing body of Wiess, which we call Cabinet, consists of seventeen voting members. Cabinet plans events, makes decisions and spends money. Meetings are every other Wednesday night at 10 pm in the Upper Commons and all Wiessmen are encouraged to attend. Meetings are fun, complete with free food and costumes relevant to the week's theme. This is an opportunity to hear what is happening at Wiess. Most importantly, it's an opportunity to be a part of planning what happens at Wiess.

  • President: Jon Harris Maurer (jhmaurer@)
  • The president is responsible for overseeing all Cabinet meetings and appointing all the various reps with Cabinet approval. He/she is also responsible for representing Wiess at a campus-wide level by meeting with administrators and the SA. Ultimately, the president is here for Wiessman so if you have any ideas or questions for Wiess, this is the person to find.
  • Internal Vice President: Bo Qiu (boqiu@)
  • The IVP is second in command of the college and is supposed to fill in for the president when he/she cannot. The IVP also organizes many Wiess events including Summit, Pumpkin Caroling, Big Bang, and pub nights. If you want Summit to be at the beach or by a lake, this is the person who can make it happen.
  • External Vice President: Jason Hawley (jvhawley@)
  • The EVP is in charge of the associates programs, making sure associates and Wiessman remain in touch, and organizing all pertinent events. He/she also chairs the associates committee when any new associate is supposed to be picked. If you want to meet all the Wiess associates and get to know them, this is the person to help you meet them all.
  • Social Vice Presidents: Jenn Edwards (jennedwards@) and Rob McAuliffe (rob.mcauliffe@)
  • The socials keep the college entertained during the semester. They are in charge of most of the major parties such as NOD, Jamfest, and the First Party of the Year. They also make sure Cabinet meetings have plenty of drinks and food. They love to hear NOD and Jamfest themes, so share your ideas - and don't forget to help them decorate and throw the parties.
  • Secretary: Vickie Trinh (vickie.trinh@)
  • The secretary is in charge of posting the agenda and keeping the minutes for Cabinet meetings. He/she also makes sure that all the flyers and publicity around the college are removed in a timely fashion. Finally, the secretary emcees Wiess events when needed. So if you want to put an item on a Cabinet agenda, you've got your contact!
  • Treasurer: Eddie Goodreau (goodreau@)
  • The treasurer watches over the budget and makes sure that Wiess does not overspend. Every year the treasurer makes sure the correct amount of money in the budget is allocated and spent on Wiess events. This is the person who can reimburse you if you've spent money for Wiess.
  • Off-Campus Reps: Alex Bonnel (alex.bonnel@) and Sukhdeep Aneja (sukhdeep@)
  • The O/C reps are responsible for making sure that the O/C community remains in touch with what happens on campus. They organize off campus events and all send out newsletters. They also organize off-campus tours for anyone who may want to live off campus in the future. These two can help you find the answers to all your apartment needs.
  • Cultural Reps: Bianca Caram (bcaram@) and Christina Stamatakis (cstam@)
  • The culturals organize parties such as Salsa night and Jazz night. They also have some subsidized tickets for Wiessman to various cultural events around Houston - such as the Houston symphony orchestra or the ballet. If you have an idea for a fun cultural experience for Wiess, talk to the culturals.
  • Sophomore Reps: Erin Waller (erin.m.waller@) and Dhruv Venkatraman (dhruv@)
  • These two are elected by the sophomore class and represent them on cabinet. They are usually called upon to organize special events such as monthly themed dinners and alumni barbeques. They are also in charge of maintaining the Wiess test bank.
  • Freshman Reps: TBA Fall 2007
  • Elected in the fall, the freshman reps make sure that the freshman class is represented on cabinet. They are usually put in charge of random events around the college but are really there to represent the freshman class.
  • Capital Improvements Rep: Adam Benaroya (benaroya@)
  • The capital improvements rep is nominated by the President and has the difficult job of spending money for Wiess. Whether you want to buy a "slow children at play" sign, build a real nice TV room or build an acaslide this is the person who has the budget to make it happen. The overall goal is to improve the atmosphere around Wiess.
  • At-Large Rep: Mason Colgin (pmcolgin@)
  • The At-large Rep is nominated by the President and is the "voice of reason" at Cabinet, representing the interests of the Wiessman at large.

Non-Voting

  • Parliamentarian: Sarah Wulf (swulf@)
  • The parliamentarian yells real loudly at people who are disrupting cabinet. He/she also takes roll at the beginning cabinet and counts all the votes during the meeting.
  • Historian: Erin Waller (erin.m.waller@)
  • The historian is in charge of keeping records of all of the fun Wiess events that take place during the year

Wiess Court

Wiess Court is kind of like a safety net. Court makes sure that all Wiessmen are aware of the basic rules that are in place and abide by them so we can keep our privileges. If anything goes wrong, we try to deal with it inside the college. By resolving issues at Wiess, we save everyone a lot of time and trouble. However, if something comes up that we are not fit to handle, the case may be brought up with University Court.

And that's a whole other story.... It is court's job to support an environment of mutual respect by promoting responsibility and enforcing both Wiess College rules and Rice University rules, like the Code of Student Conduct. Most of these rules are common sense. If you've got non-academic issues, questions, concerns, complaints, problems or irreconcilable intra-college disputes, please do not hesitate to contact any of the Wiess Court members to talk about it. With good common sense and responsibility, we can ensure that Wiess College remains a safe and enjoyable environment for all of its inhabitants.
